Things have slowed down a great deal at the Loogy Lounge, as well as in the Hot Stove. For those paying attention, we’re getting HOUSED in the Hugging Harold Reynolds post-season fantasy football league. The good news is we have 10 players left.
Here’s some recent news and commentary from the Bullpenternet:
- Mets Geek breaks down the Hot Stove Winners and the Loser in both the AL and the NL: They give the Rockies bullpen moves a “neutral” and the Royals bullpen moves a “loser” designation. [Mets Geek]
- There’s so little hope at
Enron FieldRangers Ballpark in Arlington, that Jamey Wright is looking like some kind of answer for the Rangers. [The Ranger Rundown] - Yankees fans are dreaming their outsized dreams: “If Goose Deserves To Be In The Hall……then Joba should stay in the bullpen. Think about it. Hey, at least Goose agrees with me, but middle relievers never get any respect.” [Five O'Clock Lightning]
- Tigers fans are rightfully feeling pretty good about themselves. Can a killer line-up make up for a no name bullpen? [Mack Avenue Tigers]
- How does Seattle replace fan-favorite George Sherrill? You know, if they have to… [Bleeding Blue and Teal]
- And one more Yankees bit. Janks Fans, put Joba in the rotation. Billy Traber is in the house…so, is RHP Scott Strickland and LHP Heath Phillips. NJ.com notes: “Looks like the Yanks bullpen strategy is quantity, not quality.” [True Yankee Blog; NJ.com's Pride of the Yankees]

The Yankees blog makes two points, which seem to be the bases of its opinion, that don’t make any sense:
(1) If Goose Deserves To Be In The Hall…then Joba should stay in the bullpen.
Um, what? If John Stevens is lactose intolerant… then Gnopple should not eat strawberry ice cream.
(2) It seems so obvious to me that an ace middle reliever is more important to a team than an ace starter.
Applying this logic to real baseball games, Pedro Martinez was misused as a starter all those years. Imagine how many more titles the Sox could have won with Pedro in middle relief!

Strickland and Phillips are spring training non-roster invitees. To say that they’re part of the 2008 Yankee strategy is pretty far-fetched.
Separately, the Mets Geek is a dumbass. The D-Rays trading Delmon Young for Matt Garza is exactly the kind of move that will keep Tampa in the cellar for another decade. If they wanted to trade excess hitting for young pitching, Carl Crawford and his expensive (for them) contract was what had to go. But trading a cheap young hitter who projects to be one of the best hitters in baseball for a below league average starter with control issues? That’s a horseshit trade that only a Mets fan would understand (Scott Kazmir, anyone…).

MJ,
I think that’s fair re: the Janks. And really, that’s kind of what we advocate here at The Loogy Lounge. Bring a bunch of talent into spring training and stock your AAA affilliate with guys who could be called up in a pinch. Don’t overspend.
I just like it when local media trashes on the Yankees…because, really, they deserve every fair and unfair knock against them.

Naturally. You take your cues from the Boston Knob-Slobberers up at ESPN.

Unrelated to this blog, Jeter was on TRL live yesterday (I was home sick). He said he respects the hell out of the Sox because, well, they’re the World Champions.
That’s the smartest thing I ever heard out of Yankee. Regardless, this isn’t a Yanks/Sox trashtalk forum. So, I’ll follow that up by noting that, objectively, I think the Yanks are doing the right thing with their bullpen.

Jeter has also said he likes A-Rod. Don’t believe a word that comes out of Joe DiMaggio 2.0’s mouth. Jeter’s the consummate bland-quote machine and never reveals his true feelings. I highly doubt he respects anything about the Red Sox. But that’s neither here nor there…
I think the Yanks are doing the right thing by adding depth to the list of candidates they might audition for their bullpen. Having said that, the real question becomes implementation. Will the Yankees actually use Chris Britton this year? Will they try and give some of the younger arms a shot? Or will they revert to Torreism, whereby only old farts like Jim Brower get to fail repeatedly, while younger arms languish after one bad outing?
