The Cubs added another piece to their bullpen yesterday with the addition of Tim Lahey, a kid from the haaht of the commonwealth (and Gnopple’s hometown), Worcester, Ma. Congrats, Tim and the Lahey family. How cool would it be to help the Cubs actually win one:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Cubs acquired Tim Lahey for cash considerations from the Tampa Bay Rays, who had picked the right-handed pitcher first overall in Thursday’s Rule 5 Draft.
Lahey spent most of last season with the Minnesota Twins’ Double-A New Britain team, posting an 8-4 record with 13 saves and a 3.45 ERA in 50 games. He struck out 56 and walked 33 over 78 1/3 innings. Lahey appeared in two games for Triple-A Rochester, totaling three innings.
“We feel it’s a good opportunity to add, again, to the bullpen candidates for the club,” Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. “He’s a young man who used to catch, a big strong guy. He was converted [to a pitcher] two years ago. He has tremendous life on his fastball, a great sinking fastball and the makings of a good slider.”

The Sox lost a big name at the winter meetings — no, not Buchholz, Ellsbury, Crisp, Lowrie, or Masterson. The Phillies plucked Lincoln Holdzkom from the Red Sox in the 2007 Rule 5 Draft. With a name like Holdzkom, you just know the guy is going to pick up the pieces when J.C. Romero’s $12M contract fails to deliver.
In fact, with John Stevens’s permission, I propose that we refer to the hold stat as “a Holdzkom” from now on.

Besides the big deal for Dejo, there were two other trades today involving relief pitchers:
In case you haven’t heard yet, everybody’s talking about the second deal. Most people believe that the Tigers are unstoppable now that they have Denny Bautista. They’re probably right.

See that guy to the left? He’s 25 years-old. He’s 6′5″ and weighs 250 pounds. He’s a flame-thrower. He’s a New York Yankee.
With all the attention on Johan Santana, the Yanks made an under-the-radar trade, swapping Tyler Clippard — one of several pre-pubescent starters who was forced into action early last season — for Jonathan Albaladejo. Albaladejo, who I like to call “Dejo,” pitched just 14.1 innings last season out of the Nationals’ bullpen, but was impressive: 12 K’s, .628 WHIP, 1.88 ERA, 224 ERA+.
Welcome to New York, Dejo!
